Set of five pipes; Africa, 20th century. Terracotta. Measurements: 9 x 6 cm (smallest); 15.5 x 6 cm (largest). Provenance: Family legacy of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Archaeological collection formed from the 1950s by successive generations of the family, through acquisitions in European galleries and auction houses. As noted in the archives of the National Museum of Anthropology: “The tobacco plant reached Africa in the 17th century via Europe and Asia, first arriving in coastal towns through contact with the Portuguese and Arabs, and later spreading inland along trade routes. In Cameroon, pipe bowls made of fired clay and shaped like a human head were used by the Bamum chiefs. In other cases, metal pipes depict the physical features of Europeans.”
