Roman fibula, 3rd–4th centuries AD. Silver-plated bronze. Measurements: 4 cm long Provenance: Family legacy of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Archaeological collection formed from the 1950s by successive generations of the family, through acquisitions in European galleries and auction houses. Roman fibulae come in a wide variety of shapes and decorations, which attests to the importance of these objects in personal adornment. In the Roman Empire, the fibula served both a functional and an ornamental purpose, as both men and women used them to fasten their peplos and cloaks. Pins served a similar function, designed to fasten heavy garments such as capes.
