Roman chest knocker. 1st–2nd century A.D. Weight: 72 grams. Length: 117 mm. Provenance: Family bequest from Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. An archaeological collection assembled beginning in the 1950s by successive generations of the family through purchases at European galleries and auction houses. Roman door knocker made of copper, originally part of the lock mechanism for a chest or treasure box. Its shank features a relief decoration of a Roman lady wearing long robes and styled in the manner of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. At the top is a volute with holes for the pins, and on the back, the rivets that secured it to the box are still visible; the box is presumed to have been made of bronze as well, since some fragments of it are still present.
