Roman plate fibula with geometric decoration. 4th century A.D. Bronze with traces of a silver finish and gilded decoration. Provenance: Family bequest from Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Archaeological collection assembled beginning in the 1950s by successive generations of the family through purchases at European galleries and auction houses. Measurements: 3.2 cm in length. Roman plate fibula with a quadrangular body and concave sides, topped by small globular appendages. The decoration is concentrated in a central circular element, consisting of concentric rings with dotted motifs and a prominent hemispherical button. It bears traces of metal finishes in different shades, which accentuate the contrast between the surface of the plate and the central ornament. On the reverse, it retains the curved pin and the fastening elements. Fibulae were one of the main fasteners used in Roman clothing, combining a practical function with an ornamental one. Plate-style examples allowed for the creation of geometric compositions and a variety of decorative treatments, including the use of silver- or gold-plated surfaces. This piece is part of that tradition of small, metal objects used for personal adornment.
