Anthropomorphic head from the Bura culture. Niger, 3rd–11th centuries AD. Modeled terracotta. Provenance: Family bequest of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Archaeological collection assembled beginning in the 1950s by successive generations of the family through acquisitions at European galleries and auction houses. Measurements: 17 x 8 x 5 cm; 6 x 6 x 6 cm (base). Anthropomorphic terracotta head attributed to the Bura culture, which developed in the Niger River valley region. It features a highly stylized oval face, with eyes and mouth represented by small horizontal openings and a prominent nose with a triangular profile. The head extends into an elongated neck, marked on the front by a vertical ridge that accentuates the composition. The reddish surface has a grainy texture with small dark inclusions and signs of wear. The Bura-Asinda-Sikka sculptural tradition, which developed in present-day Niger and neighboring areas of Burkina Faso, is known for its production of anthropomorphic terracotta figures and heads, documented primarily in funerary contexts. These representations are characterized by the simplification of anatomical features and the diversity of their formal solutions.
