Idol. Gabon, 20th century. Carved and polychrome wood; steel base. Measurements: 59 cm (figure); 62 cm (total height with base). An anthropomorphic sculpture carved from wood, characterized by markedly stylized features and a pronounced geometric synthesis. The figure has a body with rounded volumes, schematic limbs, and a large head, crowned by an elaborate headdress with small punctures. The piece is part of the rich sculptural tradition of Central Africa, where anthropomorphic representations played important symbolic, spiritual, and ceremonial roles. In these creations, anatomical simplification and the exaggeration of certain features reflect a visual language in which expressive power takes precedence over naturalism. Its unique formal treatment, the richness of its textures, and its enigmatic character lend it remarkable artistic and ethnographic interest.
