Mask of the Dan ethnic group. Ivory Coast, 20th century. Wood carved with an adze. Measurements: 4 x 23 x 12 cm. An anthropomorphic mask of great expressive power, characterized by an elongated face with geometric features, wide circular eye openings, a straight nose, and a slightly parted mouth. Its marked stylization and ornamental restraint evoke the sculptural tradition of the Dan people, whose masks play an important role in the ceremonial and spiritual life of their communities. Due to its large eyes, the piece can be associated with the gunye ge typology, traditionally linked to ritual running competitions. The purity of its forms, its expressiveness, and the balance of its volumes reflect the artistic qualities of African art that so greatly influenced the European avant-garde movements of the 20th century.
