Senufo idol. Burkina Faso, early 20th century. Carved wood. Measurements: 82 x 25 x 17 cm. Male figure crowned with a bird that has a hollow on its back. The Senufo are an ethnolinguistic group composed of various Gur-speaking subgroups, living in an area that extends from southern Mali and the far west of Burkina Faso to Katiola, in Ivory Coast. Senufo art, despite its regional and internal nuances, possesses a distinct identity and indisputable originality within the shared aesthetic of the Western Sudanese peoples. The Senufo are descended from peoples who migrated from the north in the 11th through 13th centuries after apparently having formed a core group within the Ghana Empire.
