Pair of Danish bookcases, 1970s. Poplar wood veneered with rosewood. They show signs of wear consistent with their age. Measurements: 194 x 75 x 40 cm each. Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. This pair of bookcases embodies the Scandinavian design of the mid-20th century, characterized by clean lines, functionality, and a focus on woods with expressive grain patterns. The rosewood veneer unifies the surfaces with a striking natural grain pattern, particularly visible on the lower fronts and the backs of the shelves. The design combines a spacious open area for books or objects with a lower section of enclosed storage, alternating between doors and drawers. The slightly truncated conical legs visually elevate the piece, while the small metal handles maintain the understated elegance of these pieces, which were conceived with functionality as the primary focus.
