Coffee table. Denmark, 1970s. Rosewood and metal mesh. In good condition. Measurements: 52 x 151 x 60 cm. Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. This coffee table embodies the functional and minimalist aesthetic of 1970s Scandinavian design. The large rectangular rosewood top draws the eye to the richness of the grain, while the base introduces a lighter touch with its slender legs and a low metal mesh tray designed to hold magazines or other items. The combination of the warmth of the wood and the visual lightness of the mesh reinforces the balance between functionality and elegance characteristic of Danish furniture from that period. The design dispenses with added ornamentation and derives its expressiveness from its proportions, the quality of the material, and the contrast between solid surfaces and open elements.
