Danish-designed dresser. Denmark, 1960s. Rosewood. It exhibits some imperfections and slight wear consistent with its age. Measurements: 74 × 75 × 40 cm. Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. Danish-designed chest of drawers made in the 1960s, representative of the Danish Modern aesthetic, characterized by clean lines, functionality, and the prominence of fine woods. The piece features a body with straight lines and balanced proportions, with four stacked drawers whose fronts display an expressive rosewood grain, with warm reddish tones and deep dark streaks. This natural wood grain is the piece’s primary decorative feature, adding visual richness to a deliberately understated composition. Notable are the characteristic double recessed handles, with a rectangular profile and rounded corners, perfectly integrated into the drawer fronts. The piece rests on four slightly tapered truncated-cone legs, which elevate and visually lighten the volume, accentuating the elegance of its silhouette. The piece is particularly notable for its use of rosewood, one of the most prized woods in 20th-century cabinetmaking and high-end furniture design. Valued for its hardness, rich color, and extraordinary natural beauty, this wood was particularly favored by Scandinavian designers during the 1950s and 1960s. Today, high-quality rosewood is highly prized in the vintage and collectible furniture market, both for its aesthetic qualities and due to its growing scarcity and the trade restrictions affecting certain species. Its design embodies the principles that defined mid-20th-century Danish furniture, when the pursuit of balance between aesthetics, functionality, and material quality gave rise to pieces with timeless lines.
