Scale model of the Chapel of Saint Ursula at the Sorbonne France, 18th century H. 55 cm; W. 30.5 cm; D. 16.5 cm This miniature reproduction is made entirely from assembled glass panels adorned with glass rods and decorative elements in clear and polychrome glass. The statuette placed in the lantern is made of biscuit porcelain. Condition: Some older restorations. Rosette replaced. Minor chips in the glass rods and gaps in the inscription adorning the façade: “[ ]IA / [ ] D[E] L’E[GLISE] DE [L]A / SORBONE.” This remarkable miniature reproduction depicts the façade of the Sainte-Ursule Chapel at the Sorbonne, in Paris, built between 1635 and 1642 by the architect Jacques Lemercier (1585–1654), at the initiative of Cardinal Richelieu, who wished to be buried there. Also known during the Ancien Régime as the Church of the Sorbonne, the building is one of the major monuments of 17th-century Parisian religious architecture.
