Spechter-type goblet Germany or the Netherlands, early 17th century H. 9.5 cm; diam. 5.3 and 6.9 cm Provenance: Archaeological find, place of origin unknown; Private collection, the Netherlands, 1991. Comparative bibliography: Hugh Tait, “Glass with Chequered Spiral-Trail Decoration: A Group Made in the Southern Netherlands in the 16th and 17th Centuries,” in: Journal of Glass Studies, vol. IX, Corning Museum of Glass, 1967, pp. 94–112. Harold E. Henkes, *Glas zonder glans. Vijf eeuwen gebruiksglas uit de bodem van de Lage Landen, 1300–1800*, Rotterdam Papers, IX, Rotterdam, 1994, nos. 304 ff. This light yellow-green glass goblet features a ribbed domed base and rests on a smooth foot ring. A thin band of applied glass winds spirally around the vessel, extending up to just below the rim. This decoration is distorted by vertical ribs, creating a checkered pattern reminiscent of a stone-cutting tool (Quadermuster). Condition: Slight surface iridescence in places.
