‡ OPTION DZIKAMAI NYAHUNZVI (ZIMBABWEAN B.1992) MYSTICAL PACKAGE acrylic and paper collage on canvas 110 x 91cm (112 x 93cm framed) Executed in 2020 Property from an Important International Collection Provenance Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner Option Dzikamai Nyahunzvi (born in Harare, Zimbabwe) is a contemporary visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice bridges painting, printmaking, and paper collage. A graduate of the National Gallery School of Visual Arts and Design in Harare, Nyahunzvi explores Shona cultural values, ancestral identity, and the spiritual framework of hunhu (ubuntu) within modern urban life. His work functions as a dialogue between the physical and spiritual realms, viewing history not as nostalgia, but as a fluid force shaping the present. Visually, Nyahunzvi counterbalances technical elegance with continuous textured depth. He builds his compositions by layering Fabriano paper onto canvas, painting with oil and acrylic, and then meticulously peeling strips away to reveal deep etching lines beneath. This physical excavation mirrors the human need to shed societal burdens and post-colonial fractures to evolve. Within these colour-blocked landscapes, ghostly apparitions emerge, representing ancestral guidance, his clan totem (Mbizi/Zebra), and unseen spiritual energies. By blending sacred iconography, like the traditional mbira, with contemporary forms, he reclaims sacred origins and honours the rituals of everyday Zimbabwean life. Nyahunzvi has exhibited extensively worldwide, with notable solo exhibitions including Kwatinobva Kunoyera (Sacred Origins) at Unit London (2021) and Zvatiri (Who We Are) at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe (2026). A recipient of the 2026 Tyburn Foundation Affiliated Fellowship at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Italy, he lives and works in Harare.
