‡ TAFADZWA MASUDI (ZIMBABWEAN B.1988) BOOK WORM, 2023 acrylic and oil on canvas 60 x 60cm (62 x 62cm framed) Property from an Important International Collection Provenance Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner Tafadzwa Masudi is a Zimbabwean contemporary artist whose vibrant, pattern-rich paintings explore the inner landscapes, resilience, and dignity of the global migrant experience. Born in Harare in 1988, Masudi’s creative roots trace back to his youth in Mbare and his family’s textile traditions. In 2010, he relocated to South Africa, spending a decade in Cape Town navigating migrant labour before a 2020 pandemic layoff catalysed his transition to full-time painting. Book Worm is one of Tafadzwa Masudi's most definitive explorations of the sanctuary found in reading. It features his trademark vibrant palette, flat graphic space and intricate patterned backgrounds, elements shaped by his family's textile heritage and his years working in a Cape Town clothing factory. True to his wider artistic vocabulary, the piece layers hidden depth beneath a bright, accessible surface. While much of Masudi's work addresses the hyper-visibility, labour and systemic alienation of the migrant worker, Book Worm offers a deliberate counternarrative. Reading is framed as a quiet luxury and an act of resistance: a rare moment in which a displaced person tunes out the noise of the outside world to inhabit their own thoughts. Here the "bookworm" is not an anti-social figure but someone reclaiming their space and autonomy, finding in text a universal psychological shelter from the burdens of foreign environments.
