MOSTAFA ABDEL MOITY (EGYPTIAN B.1938) UNTITLED acrylic on canvas 80 x 120cm (82 x 122cm framed) Property of a Private Collector, Dubai Executed in 2021. Born in Alexandria, Moity received his degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Alexandria (Department of Painting) in 1962. After his graduation, Moity immediately began teaching as a faculty member at the Academy and has continued ever since. He received a scholarship from the Egyptian Government for studies on Upper Egypt and curated an exhibition which was held in Alexandria in 1966 and 1968 on the subject of the Aswan Big Dam. Whilst Moity’s early works touch on the figurative and the familiar, his style developed mainly into abstract paintings and sculptures, defined by his signature use of harsh bold lines and blocks of colour, as well as shapes and geometrical patterns suggestive of outer space. Over the years, he has held many positions including Vice President of the World Congress of Contemporary Art in Venice in 1985 and Head of the Egyptian Academy in Rome in 1988. He has had over thirty shows in Egypt, Italy, and Spain, and participated in upwards of twenty international group exhibitions. He is also one of the founders of the Experimental Group, established in 1958 whose members included Mahmoud Abdalla and Said Al Adwi. He has received awards such as The Nile Award for the Arts in 2021.
