◉ A PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF MRS MARGARET ASHBURNER, ATTRIBUTED TO HORACE HONE ARA (CIRCA 1756-1825), CIRCA 1795 wearing a white dress with pink sleeves, a black lace shawl over one arm, her dark brown hair curled and upswept, watercolour on ivory, 57mm oval, in a later gold brooch-mounted frame with foliate engraved border, the reverse glazed to reveal locks of hair, inscribed to top and bottom of frame 'Mrs Margaret Ashburner / died 1803. aged 38.' Margaret Ashburner may well be the Peggy (a common diminutive of Margaret) Wilson (circa 1765-1803) who married Robert Ashburner (1754-1798), a Blackburn solicitor, in 1784, her father a Rev. Wilson of Tockholes near Blackburn. Robert was a member of the prominent Furness-based Ashburner family, his father also Robert, described as a sea captain of Lindall near Dalton-in-Furness, the Ashburners having connections in London and Bombay, as well as in Furness on the edge of the Lake District. His 1798 probate entry describes him as Robert Ashburner, of Blackburn, gentleman, records showing that in his role as a solicitor he had substantial dealings with the town's rapidly expanding cotton trade.
