G Cattermole - Charles I attempted escape from Carisbrook engraved by W Wallis 1857. The image illustrates the aftermath of one of his most famous attempts:The King: Shown lying in bed, appearing weary or resigned, as his plan has been thwarted. The Guards: Parliamentary soldiers and officials have entered the chamber. One figure is shown pointing toward the window or a concealed area, indicating how the plot was discovered. The Escape Plan: Charles famously tried to squeeze through the bars of his window. In the first attempt (March 1648), he got stuck between the bars because he had misjudged the width of his chest.SignificanceThe failure of these escape attempts eventually led to the King being moved to more secure locations and ultimately to his trial and execution in 1649. This specific artwork was created for a 19th-century historical volume, The History of England by David Hume and Tobias Smollett, illustrating the dramatic tension of the King's final years.
