Engraving of Sir William Read by Robert Graves after William Faithorne c1819. This antique line engraving of Sir William Read, a well-known 17th- and 18th-century British oculist and quack physician who was famously knighted by Queen Anne was engraved by Robert Graves and published around 1819. Read started out humbly before styling himself as an ophthalmologist and treating patients across England. Despite being largely illiterate and considered a charlatan by many contemporaries, he gained royal patronage and substantial wealth.
