Obverse: “O MAR É A MAIOR / ESTRADA DO MUNDO.” Bust of a bearded sailor wearing a cap, facing left in profile to the right, holding a rope on a ship under a sail adorned with the Cross of Christ, gazing out at a stormy sea. Reverse: “500 ANOS DOS / DESCOBRIMENTOS / PORTUGUESES.” A padrão surmounted by a cross pattée, standing vertically in the center, divides the composition; on the right, the billowing sails of a caravel and a nautical astrolabe; on the left, stylized coastlines and waves.
