PORTUGAL — The 500th Anniversary of the Portuguese Discoveries, by Celestino Alves André (1959–). Obverse: A storm scene on the deck of a caravel or exploration ship: a group of sailors battles the elements by maneuvering the ropes and rigging, in front of the wheel on the left, beneath the sails and rigging buffeted by the wind. Reverse: “DESCOBRIMENTOS PORTUGUESES / 500 ANOS DE,” with the inscription “A. ANDRÉ” at the bottom. Stylized maritime composition: a central mast surrounded by ropes and shrouds rising from the waves, with billowing sails adorned with elements from the coat of arms of Portugal (two castles and a shield bearing the quinas); a nautical astrolabe hangs to the left of the mast. Material: Bronze. Diameter: 100 mm.
