MONUMENTAL PORCELAIN FRUIT CENTREPIECE. CARL THIEME. POTSCHAPPEL, GERMANY. LATE 19TH CENTURY. A monumental porcelain fruit centrepiece produced by the renowned Carl Thieme manufactory in Potschappel, Germany, during the late nineteenth century. An exceptional example of ceremonial decorative porcelain from the Historicist period, combining virtuoso modelling, an elaborate multi-figure sculptural composition, and richly executed hand painted polychrome decoration enhanced with gilding. The openwork bowl of complex scrolling form is adorned with finely moulded cartouches, floral garlands, and vividly painted bouquets inspired by the celebrated Saxon porcelain tradition. Its undulating rim is enriched with elegant scrollwork and gilded highlights, lending the composition an imposing and refined architectural presence. The base is conceived as an elaborate sculptural group depicting allegorical figures dressed in eighteenth century costume arranged around a flowering tree. Numerous individually modelled flowers, foliage, and Rococo inspired ornamental motifs create a dynamic composition characteristic of Carl Thieme`s finest productions. The refined modelling of the figures, the delicacy of the facial features, the sophisticated architectural structure of the base, and the richness of its decorative vocabulary demonstrate the outstanding craftsmanship of the sculptors and painters employed by the Potschappel manufactory. Large scale ornamental centrepieces of this quality were created to embellish the grand interiors of palaces and aristocratic residences. Owing to its expressive sculptural treatment and exceptional quality of execution, this work represents a highly desirable collector`s piece within the field of European decorative porcelain.
