Senegal, Blue "SENEGAL ET DEPces/GOREE" postmark, postage marks 7 and 40 on the envelope bound for Paris with arrival stamp on the reverse, with text by Captain Lecomte, dated "African Coast, Boké, October 23, 1877, Rio Mung" November 6, 1877 The text reads: “I am traveling, and in this land of savages there is no postal service; please take into account the postage cost of this letter.” Captain Lecomte was the commander of the French outpost at Boké, on the Rio Nunez in Guinea, during the succession crisis of 1876–1877. In 1876, he intervened in the succession of King Youra and imposed Dinah Salifou as successor, against the advice of the chiefs and notables who had designated Bokary Catonou. The conflict escalated into war in the lower Rio Nunez. Lecomte left the fort with soldiers and a cannon and took a direct part in the operations.
