Peelaert GUY PEELLAERT Pravda the Survivor, Eric Losfeld 1968 Original page no. 23, first published in Hara-Kiri in 1967. Panel no. 2 is affixed to the backing. Signed. India ink and white gouache on paper 50 × 64.8 cm (19.69 × 25.51 in.) It’s hard to imagine just how significant *Pravda the Survivor*, published in 1967 in *Hara-Kiri* by the Belgian artist Guy Peellaert (1934–2008), was one of the seminal works in the evolution of modern comics in the 1960s. It followed Jean-Claude Forest’s *Barbarella* (1964) and *Les Aventures de Jodelle* (1966) by Peellaert himself, whose heroine was modeled after Sylvie Vartan, while Pravda, a motorcycling, provocative Amazon, was inspired by Françoise Hardy. In this work, Peellaert employs a psychedelic visual style steeped in graphic design and advertising art, in the tradition of Milton Glaser, but also drawing on cinema and rock culture. After these two masterpieces, Peellaert moved away from comics to become an internationally recognized illustrator and poster artist. This is a remarkable panel that fully captures the spirit of subversion of May 1968.
