Giménez JUAN GIMÉNEZ THE CAST OF THE META-BARONS Doña Vicenta Gabriela de Rokha, the Matriarch (Vol. 6), Les Humanoïdes Associés 1999 Original plate no. 9 in semi-direct colors accompanied by its initial ink sketch. Signed. India ink and watercolor on paper 24.5 × 33.8 cm (9.65 × 13.31 in.) First stage: 25 × 34 cm Alejandro Jodorowsky, now nearly a century old, has been creating since the 1970s a surrealist universe unique in the world of comics—an esoteric world tinged with irony, imbued with a powerful emotional resonance, and in which the full spectrum of human passion unfolds. Through his marriage to Doña Vicenta Gabriela de Rokha, Melmoth—who does not belong to the Von Salza-Castaka lineage—acquires the title of Meta-Baron through love rather than through arms. But the very nature of the entities that make him up—he is both cybernetic, due to his steel head, and human, as he is the son of the universe’s last known poet—puts him at odds with the Caste’s relentless dynasty of warriors. This panel, brilliantly executed in semi-direct colors, captures both the spectacular nature of the saga and its mischievous irony. Didier Pasamonik
