Franz FRANZ LESTER COCKNEY Oregon Trail (Vol. 8), Le Lombard 2005 Original cover, also used for the 2007 complete collection. Signed. India ink on paper 32.3 × 43.9 cm (12.7 × 17.28 in.) It is precisely with a cover like this that one understands why Franz was so highly regarded by his fellow realist artists, whether they worked in the Western genre or not. The comparison to Giraud and Hermann is well-deserved. Like them—who were his friends—he had an instantly recognizable style and, above all, an incredible attention to detail. We can admire this here, both in the character designs and the landscape, and even more so in the horses, which are depicted with every piece of equipment intact. Behind this drawing lies tireless work that can be summed up in a single word: generosity.
