Derib DERIB BUDDY LONGWAY Alone (Vol. 4), Le Lombard 1977 Original page no. 40, previously published in the Belgian *Tintin* magazine, issue no. 49, December 2, 1975. Signed. India ink on paper 36.4 × 50 cm (14.33 × 19.69 in.) In *Seul*, the fourth volume of the *Buddy Longway* series, Derib pits his hero against nature at its most hostile: trapped in a landslide, injured, and isolated, armed only with a knife, Buddy must survive and make his way back to civilization on his own. This tension between human fragility and the immensity of the landscape lies at the heart of this series, which was unique in that it depicted its heroes aging in a sort of face-off between man (and soon a couple, with a child) and this relentless natural world. This approach, which is brought to life in this panel through depictions of the mountains of rare realism, brought a particularly original and unforgettable dimension to the adventure Western in the mid-1970s.
