Swolfs YVES SWOLFS DURANGO Prey of the Jackals (Vol. 10), Alpen Publishers 1991 Original cover. Small spots of metal oxidation are present in the margins on the front, not affecting the artwork, and on the back of the cover. Signed. Acrylic on paper 42 × 32.3 cm (16.54 × 12.72 in.) It is little known, but Yves Swolfs, born in 1955, first studied literature, then journalism, which is where his skills as a screenwriter come from. He then enrolled at the Institut Saint-Luc in Brussels, in Claude Renard’s Studio R, where he studied alongside François Schuiten, Philippe Francq, Philippe Berthet, and Benoît Sokal. But very quickly, his passion for genre comics—particularly Westerns—led him to create the *Durango* series, which applies the conventions of the Spaghetti Western to comics. This cover is a perfect example of the iconic realism of that movement. It features the monumental foreground technique so beloved by Sergio Leone, while the extreme attention to detail—rendered in a dark atmosphere—such as wrinkles, beards, skin texture, and reflections in the eyes, contrasts with a background washed out by light, creating a simulated depth of field.
