Jijé JIJÉ JERRY SPRING The Road to Coronado (Vol. 11), Dupuis 1962 Original page no. 37, first published in Le Journal de Spirou no. 1210, June 22, 1961. India ink on paper 32 × 43.5 cm (12.6 × 17.13 in.) This 1961 page has historical significance: it marks the time when Jean Giraud, who was assisting Jijé on this story—as evident in the inking of the backgrounds—had not yet become the artist for *Blueberry*. Philip’s lively and well-written script highlights Judith, a “weak woman” who is fearless. The idealized hero Jerry Spring, inspired by the films of Raoul Walsh or John Ford, is in the process of evolving—along with the lieutenant from Fort Navajo—toward a more realistic Western, more in line with Sam Peckinpah’s style and the values of New Hollywood.
