Giraud JEAN GIRAUD BLUEBERRY The Man with the Iron Fist (Vol. 8), Dargaud 1970 Original page No. 3, based on the script by Jean-Michel Charlier, first published in *Journal de Pilote* No. 398 on June 8, 1967. India ink on paper 36.5 × 46.2 cm (14.37 × 18.19 in.) A marvelous sequence from the album in which, as we recall, the Union Pacific camp—responsible for building the railroad—is threatened by the Sioux, who are on a war footing. Despite this situation, the director of a traveling troupe meant to entertain the railroad workers decides to leave immediately: Blueberry tries to stop her but only manages to have his revolver stolen! The strength of Jean-Michel Charlier’s scripts has always been his ability to blend slapstick comedy with the Western genre, thanks to Jean Giraud’s realistic, almost baroque, and richly detailed artwork. The scene is simply hilarious—it’s a real show! In just a few panels, Gir manages to establish a strong and unforgettable female character, Guffie Palmer, a comical virago worthy of the Castafiore who has the men in camp in stitches.
