Gotlib MARCEL GOTLIB RHÂ-GNAGNA Audie 1979 Original page no. 1 from the short story "Misère de misère," first published in *Fluide Glacial* No. 12 in May 1977. Signed. India ink on paper 29 × 36 cm (11.42 × 14.17 in.) This panel showcases all of Gotlib’s comic genius. Drawing on Andersen’s “The Little Match Girl,” he subverts the tale into an absurd sequence: unable to light a single match to warm herself, the heroine snaps them one by one until she finds herself buried under a pile of unusable matches. The rhythm, based on repetition and the escalation of the gag, evokes the burlesque of silent film that Gotlib adored. The expressiveness of the faces and the precise panel layout transform a tragic and tear-jerking situation into a masterpiece of absurd humor. The psychologist Bruno Bettelheim, a specialist in fairy tales in the 1970s, must have burst out laughing!
