Tardi JACQUES TARDI Le Der des ders, Casterman 1997 Original cover of the limited edition. Signed. India ink on paper 20 × 32.5 cm (7.87 × 12.8 in.) In this cover illustration for the limited-edition print run of *La Der des ders* (which, of course, refers to the 1914 War, which was hoped to be the last), Jacques Tardi’s style is immediately recognizable. Surrounding the former soldier Eugène Varlot, now a private detective, we recognize his Haussmannian Paris, here bathed in night, with its play of shadows, its reflections on the wet cobblestones, as well as his remarkably effective dramatic composition, driven by tight, cinematic framing and an absolute mastery of black and white.
