Juillard ANDRÉ JUILLARD THE 7 LIVES OF THE HAWK Fifteen Years Later (Vol. 12), Dargaud 2014 Original artwork no. 42. Signed. Indian ink and colored inks on paper 36 × 48 cm (14.17 × 18.9 in.) Here is a page like they don’t make anymore. The raw nature of Cothias’s script will come as no surprise to those familiar with his work. This page, from the first volume of the third era of *The Seven Lives of the Sparrowhawk*, depicts the return to France of the Baroness de Troïl, who had set out in search of her daughter Ninon, who had been taken from her at birth. There, of course, she encounters old enemies determined to make her pay for the daring deeds she committed before her departure for the New World. The contrast between the unapologetic vulgarity of this scene—written in a style characteristic of the era of Molière and Racine—and André Juillard’s elegant, subtle, and refined artwork is particularly striking. It is undoubtedly a unique case in the history of Franco-Belgian comics. Didier Pasamonik
