Hermann HERMANN BERNARD PRINCE The Fortress of Mists (Vol. 11), Le Lombard 1977 Original cover. Signed. Gouache on paper 24.2 × 36 cm (9.53 × 14.17 in.) *The Fortress of Mists* is one of the masterpieces by the Hermann-Greg duo. Greg is at the height of his talent. Already serving as Jean Van Hamme’s mentor, he pulls off a remarkable feat in this story: he manages to have Bernard Prince’s worst enemy, General Satan, ask the hero to come to the rescue of his daughter, who has been kidnapped by Moukh the Manchu. This provides our duo with the opportunity to explore uncharted territories with Dantean landscapes. On the cover, we recognize Koubakh, who guides Prince and Jordan—carrying the ransom—through the labyrinth of the mountain’s chasms. Here again, Hermann’s colors prove exceptional. Often, colorists rely on the harmony of complementary colors. Here, however, Hermann—and this approach is also evident throughout the album—employs chromatic dissonances and systematic saturation of hues, creating a sort of two-color scheme that makes the complex, woodcut-like, emotionally charged artwork easier to follow. A pure marvel. Didier Pasamonik
