Vance WILLIAM VANCE RAMIRO The Conch Trap: Mission to Compostela 1 (Vol. 3), Dargaud 1977 Original plate no. 2, previously published in *Femmes d'Aujourd'hui* in 1976. Indian ink on paper 35.3 × 48 cm (13.9 × 18.9 in.) It cannot be said enough how much of a master of atmosphere William Vance is. With *Ramiro*, written by the all-too-forgotten Jacques Stoquart, Vance depicts a tale of chivalry set in Visigothic Spain—the very Spain where the artist was living at the time he drew the series, having joined his wife in Cantabria—hence, in the dialogues, those authentically Hispanic expressions that we’ll also find later in *XIII*. We’re captivated by this almost Impressionist scene that opens a story in which Vance, in his captions, mimics the initial letters of medieval manuscripts. A little gem!
