Vance WILLIAM VANCE XIII For Maria (Vol. 9), Dargaud 1992 Original page no. 22, previously published in Hello BD no. 156, September 15, 1992. Signed. India ink on paper 44.8 × 62.8 cm (17.64 × 24.72 in.) Jones has definitely had enough of chasing after his favorite amnesiac. And now he learns that he’s married (he had no idea, the rascal—or rather, he’d forgotten; oops!) and that his putative wife is about to be executed by the evil local dictator of a country called Costa Verde. This scene showcases all the mischievous charm of Jean Van Hamme’s storylines—he’s a master of deception, particularly in the XIII series, which is one of the best adventure series of the 1990s and 2000s. Vance is perfect, as usual, in this lovely scene with its deep blacks and whites. It’s funny, dynamic, playful, and flawlessly executed.
