Royo LUIS ROYO Malefic Time: 110 Katanas Bragelonne - Milady 2014 Luz Tokio, original illustration. Acrylic and graphite on paper 43.4 × 50.5 cm (17.09 × 19.88 in.) In the postwar period, a genre known as “fantastic art” emerged, fueling the imagery popularized by science fiction and fantasy literature, comics, and cinema. Born in Spain in 1954, Luis Royo is one of its undisputed masters. Trained as a painter, he turned to comics relatively late, in the late 1970s, contributing to Spanish magazines associated with the Movida movement (1984, *El Víbora*, etc.), and then, through agencies such as Selecciones Ilustradas and Norma, he made a name for himself as an illustrator in the U.S., publishing in *Heavy Metal*, among other venues. This illustration features his neo-Gothic heroine, Luz, brandishing her sword Malefic, an incredibly powerful blade covered in esoteric symbols.
