Critone LUIGI CRITONE JE, FRANÇOIS VILLON But Where Are the Snows of Yesteryear? (Vol. 1), Delcourt 2011 Original cover. Signed. Acrylic on paper 37 × 44.5 cm (14.57 × 17.52 in.) Adapting Jean Teulé’s novel, Luigi Critone does more than simply illustrate the story: he imbues it with a truly visual dimension, elevating this sometimes very raw portrayal of the Parisian poet-thief. On this cover, the character appears alone, almost too handsome, with a serious gaze and a defiant posture, torn between the violence of his existence and the obviousness of his poetic genius. The vivid red of his doublet contrasts sharply with the delicate tones of a medieval Paris bathed in a hazy blue-green light. This magnificent illustration encapsulates Critone’s entire approach: softening the darkness of Villon’s fate with a luminous palette of remarkable subtlety. The result is striking.
