Bonhomme MATTHIEU BONHOMME LUCKY LUKE (AS SEEN BY...) Lucky Luke’s Long March, Black and White 2026 Original illustration for a silkscreen print from the limited edition. Signed. India ink on paper 46.6 × 42.5 cm (18.35 × 16.73 in.) Matthieu Bonhomme plays spectacularly with light. Every detail of the setting is obscured by solid black areas: the terrain, the horse, the trees, the owl... Only a narrow space around Lucky Luke, seated against the rock, is illuminated by the firelight. But there is nothing unsettling about this dark night. It illustrates the hero’s solitude as he sits quietly drinking coffee. We are in a liminal moment. One adventure has just ended. Another is about to begin. The image is punctuated by several text boxes that seem to reference the songs with meaningful lyrics that accompanied Westerns in their heyday. “I wanted to show what Lucky Luke was doing between two comic books, drawing inspiration from those images we used to see outside movie theaters. I conceived this one as a short teaser. The character is waiting. The luck mentioned in the text may be embodied by the owl perched at the bottom of the image.” M.B.
