Bonhomme MATTHIEU BONHOMME LUCKY LUKE (AS SEEN BY...) Lucky Luke’s Long March, Lucky Comics Original illustration for a point-of-sale display created in 2026. Signed. India ink, colored inks, and gouache on paper 36 × 46.7 cm (14.17 × 18.39 in.) Lucky Luke is slender. The illustration, too, is entirely vertical in composition. Everything highlights the character: the bluish light, with a barely sketched ground that blends into the sky; the cast shadow pointing in our direction; and the weapon threatening us. With his almost arrogant posture, the hero asserts his superiority, while also maintaining a touch of irony; his smirk leaves us in little doubt as to his true intention to harm us. “This drawing was cut out to be displayed at a height of 1.65 meters as a cardboard silhouette in bookstores. I added blue to the background to create a contrast with the hat and the face. And I drew the feet from a bird’s-eye view so that anyone entering a bookstore would really feel as though they were standing right next to the character. I wanted him to look menacing, with snow on his bison-hide coat to emphasize his trapper-like appearance.” M.B.
