Bonhomme MATTHIEU BONHOMME LUCKY LUKE (AS SEEN BY...) Lucky Luke's Long March, Black and White 2026 Original illustration for a cover project created in 2026. Signed. India ink, colored inks, and gouache on paper 42.8 × 59 cm (16.85 × 23.23 in.) It’s hard not to see this illustration as a tribute to the cover of the graphic novel *In Search of Peter Pan* by Cosey, one of Matthieu Bonhomme’s favorite authors. Here, too, a pristine snowfield occupies two-thirds of the image. But while the composition of the illustration seems inspired by that famous comic book, the subject matter is entirely different. Lucky Luke isn’t skiing. He’s riding Jolly Jumper, bathed in a magnificent bluish backlight. As for the sun, is it rising or setting? The artist leaves it up to us to decide. “I particularly love this light filtering through the trees, illuminating Lucky Luke from behind, while Jolly Jumper struggles through the snow. I filled the background with branches and tree trunks to better highlight the whiteness—here bluish and immaculate—of the snow. With this large format, the challenge was to maintain the solid color across the entire height.” M.B.
