Clerc SERGE CLERC PHIL PERFECT The Spy Cartoonist (Vol. 1), Les Humanoïdes Associés 1978 Original cover. Signed. India ink and colored inks on paper 29 × 37 cm (11.42 × 14.57 in.) In this cover for Serge Clerc’s first graphic novel, one can discern all of the artist’s influences at the turn of the decade: a spotlight on a red brick wall reminiscent of Jacobs’ *La Marque Jaune*, a nod to *Tintin and the Crab with the Golden Claws*, and a reference to an iconic film noir: *To Have and Have Not* by Howard Hawks (and Don Siegel), released in 1944, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall (in her first film appearance). The setting is unique: Martinique under the Vichy regime. These references form the foundation of a distinctive style.
