Oval snuffbox in a shuttle shape, made of 18k gold (750 parts per thousand), the hinged lid is inlaid in the center with an oval miniature painted on enamel or porcelain depicting a young woman in bust form wearing a red dress and a green scarf, the surrounding border is decorated with an alternating pattern of 20 fine pearls and 20 rubies in grain-set mounts; the field and reverse feature a latticework of ribbons adorned with four-leaf clovers and embellished with bows, with an alternating pattern of dotted lines and stars at the center, on a wavy guilloché background enamelled in blue; the border is chased with an alternating pattern of quatrefoils and leafy sprigs enamelled in green, white, and turquoise blue (minor chips) on an amati background; the upper edge features the same band, surmounting a small groove and a frieze of oval rosettes linked by garlands of foliage. Probably Hanau, late 18th or early 19th century. Goldsmith’s mark: VP crowned with a crescent. H. 1.4 x W. 3.6 x D. 7.9 cm. Gross weight: 57.5 g.
