456 - Letter Addressed to MARSHAL NEŸ, Regarding the Election of POPE CAPELLARI (GREGORY XVI) – Autograph letter from ROME, January 18, 1831: “My dear Églée, I begin this letter without the Pope and hope not to end it the same way, and to announce it to you via the courier from Spain who will deliver this letter to you... The good Cardinal ISOARD spoke highly of you, Dear Eglée, which delighted me even though he did not hide the fact that you are hard of hearing... Cardinal de ROHAN CHABOT immediately entered the conclave, where he unfortunately still remains, for this time they just won’t finish, which is really annoying everyone...” (A bomb exploded at the door of the Conclave) “and led all of Rome to believe that the pope had been elected; for in that case, the Castle must announce it with 40 cannon shots...” - incomplete letter, 4 pp., in-8° - At the top of the letter: “February 2—Pope CAPELLARI has just been elected under the name GREGORY XVI; there is universal jubilation here.”
