217 - Anne-François-Augustin, Count of LA BOURDONNAYE (Guérande, Loire-Atlantique, 1745 – Dax, 1793) General – A beautiful signed letter with two handwritten lines – BREST (Finistère), November 4, 1791 (regarding the embarkation for Saint-Domingue): “Sir. I have the honor to inform you that the two Grenadier Companies from the rear battalions of the 4th and 30th Regiments embarked this morning aboard the frigate “LA FINE” and will depart this evening if the wind is favorable. Instead of 1,500 men at full strength and two battalions at war strength, we were only able to muster 1,360 to 1,380; thus, only 120 men will be missing… Just as I was about to finish this letter, the special courier arrived, bringing me the letter dated November 1 in which you instruct me to embark only the 2nd Battalion of the 4th Regiment, consisting of 500 men. I am therefore carrying out these orders and disembarking the Grenadier Company… I would point out to you, Sir, that this 2nd Battalion of the 30th Regiment had already used up part of its three months’ advance pay and that embarkation would have taken place here…. Since 1,350 men would have been ready to depart by the 9th or 10th—by which time the embarkation vessels would have been ready, as work was being carried out with zeal and with the resources provided by a large arsenal…...” 2 folio pages.
