Fought 44 battles in the Seven Years' War, Governor of Ile d'Oléron in 1781, commander of the 12th Military Division at La Rochelle in 1790, discharged in 1793 - Letter signed "VERTEUIL Lieutenant-General" at LA ROCHELLE (17), October 1, 1791 - to Mr DUPORTAIL Minister of War in Paris. 1 folio page: "Mr. Bernier's unfortunate and distracting condition as a Lieutenant in the 11th Cavalry Regiment, attested to by the faculty's certificate... and by DUMOURIEZ Maréchal de Camps, have convinced me to allow him to leave... I enclose with my letter a memorandum from Mr. Disle, Captain in the 11th Cavalry Regiment, requesting a Leave of Absence...".
