C. Garnier, after Lancret, France, circa 1860–1880 Folded fan; the leather panel is lined with paper and painted in gouache after a painting by Lancret depicting a group of young people. The reverse side features a border of silver and gold foliage. Signed “C. Garnier” on the left—the artist’s signature on porcelain and fans. See M. Volet, “Éventails européens,” no. 35, p. 52 and index. A beautiful and original frame of white mother-of-pearl, cut, re-drilled, carved, engraved, and inlaid with a design depicting a young man on a garden terrace being spied on by a young lady.
