Large funerary statue, Jarai, Vietnam Height: 111 cm Wood. Jarai funerary sculptures are among the most significant artistic traditions of the Vietnamese Highlands. Erected around graves, they played a role in funeral ceremonies designed to accompany the deceased to the world of the ancestors and to mark the definitive separation between the living and the dead. Their artistic vocabulary, based on the simplification of forms and the power of the silhouette, prioritizes expression over description. With its monumental dimensions, balanced composition, and high-quality carving, this figure exemplifies the mastery of the Jarai artists, whose works rank among the most striking expressions of tribal art in Southeast Asia.
