ʻUmeke dish, Hawaiian Islands Diameter: 21.5 cm Wood. Carved from a single block of wood, this ʻumeke is part of the rich tradition of Hawaiian vessels used for preparing, serving, and sharing food. The balance of its proportions and the simplicity of its lines illustrate the refined aesthetic of the archipelago’s domestic arts, where utilitarian objects were crafted with the same care as prestigious works of art. Provenance: Belgian gallery. See: Bonhams, November 11, 2010, lot 6054 for a comparable example.
