Ulpiano CHECA Y SANZ (1860–1916) The Tsar’s Courier or Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich of Russia (1856–1929) galloping at full speed. Bronze with a nuanced green patina. Signed on the pedestal. Pinédo foundry mark and Paris bronze hallmark. Height: 48 cm - Length: 70 cm - Depth: 18 cm (Rare specimen, in very good overall condition) Description: The Tsar’s Courier is among Ulpiano Checa’s rarest and most dynamic works. This rider galloping at full speed has been identified as Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich of Russia (1856–1929), grandson of Tsar Nicholas I. In this work, Checa brings one of his favorite themes to life in three dimensions: the horse captured in spectacular motion. The sculpture, cast notably by Émile Pinedo in Paris, was presented at the artist’s solo exhibition at the Galerie des Artistes Modernes in December 1905. One copy is now housed at the Museo Ulpiano Checa in Colmenar de Oreja.
